Good Health with Emily > Welcome Back with a little clarity from CNN and Chris Brown!

Hello everyone out there in cyberspace! This blog has been on vacation for a while, so I apologize. I just want to let all of you know that the “Sex Questions” blog has expanded its focus to Health in general. Questions about sex and relationships are still more than welcome!
So welcome to “Good Health with Emily”, the new title of this blog! Since I have been on vacation (and by default, this blog has been on vacation), I have decided to start off the new blog with a personal note about relationships.

A few weeks ago I had a meeting with Dr. Judy to discuss this blog and its progress. I was 3 blocks away from her office, when I received a phone call from her. She told me that our meeting needed to be postponed because she needed to be at CNN ASAP! Instead of cancelling our meeting for the day, she invited me to join her for the trip to CNN. As we were riding in the taxi to CNN we talked a little about how crazy life can be and how unexpected things just seem to keep coming up for her (and for me).

When we got to CNN, it was time for hair an make-up. After Dr. Judy was camera ready she went to a computer to try and figure out exactly what she was called to CNN to discuss. The topic was Chris Brown and his most recent statements about the abuse situation against Rhianna. For those of you who may not remember, he claimed that he didn’t remember abusing Rhianna, but later admitted that he did recall the events of that night.

Once Dr. Judy was all caught up on the issue, we went to Studio 54 for the taping. Not THE Studio 54, just the Studio #54 at CNN. While Dr. Judy was answering the interviewer’s questions I realized that her answers were true to how she felt about the situation. She was not afraid to call Chris Brown out on his BS and she did not hesitate to say that Chris Brown is likely to be an abuser again in the future, based on his history. I found that very refreshing because I feel that we (people in America) are going easy on the celebrity law-breakers. Many people are giving Chris Brown the benefit of the doubt and are hoping for an abuse-free future, but the reality is that the chances of him refraining from abuse in the future are slim.

In the taxi back to Dr. Judy’s office I mentioned to her how impressed I was that she was not diplomatic about the answers she gave about Chris Brown. I told her how I felt that what he did to Rhianna was wrong and he should be punished how any other domestic abuser is punished. I also shared with her the reason why I feel that America is doing a disservice to Chris Brown and young people like him. I am a teacher of young children and I know that they idolize young celebrities like Chris Brown. Just to give you an idea of how much his story impacted my students, here is a recap of a situation that happened in my class last year.

I had a CD that had a mix of various songs that were popular last year. I would play that CD in my classes every week. After the domestic dispute between Rhianna and Chris Brown, I started skipping the Chris Brown song that was on the CD. One day a student asked me why I kept skipping the Chris Brown song and I said, “ I am skipping it because of some things that have happened recently.” My student replied, “Oh do you mean when he hit Rhianna?” I said, “Yes.” And then my student said, “Yeah, but that just happened one time.” I felt as if my heart was being ripped out of my chest and red flashing lights were going off around me. “But that just happened one time.” Wow. What a powerful and telling statement from a 10 year old.

I suppose many people are like my student in thinking that if someone does something bad one time, you should give them a second chance. What do you all think? I think that in situations like this which illegal and dangerous events took place, the person should not be given a slap on the wrist and pray that they won’t do it again. I am glad that Chris Brown is seeking counseling and doing community service, but I am still concerned about his future. I wonder what my student will say if this happens a second time?

Well, that is all for now my friends! I hope that you will continue to read these blogs and ask any health-related question that you need answered! Until next time. . .

Your loving Health-pert ( I know it needs work :-p),

Emily
